Since mid-November, multiple people have reported about sighting flying object like drones over New Jersey, leaving residents unsettled and authorities grappling for answers. Hundreds have contacted law enforcement and state officials to describe sightings of mysterious airborne entities drifting over roughly a dozen counties. Authorities have reported that the incidents have increased in recent days. Some incident reports mysterious car-sized flying object, sometime in groups, hovering above strategic sites such as military installations, energy plants, railway stations, and reservoirs. Republican State Senator Jon Bramnick has called this situation tantamount to a “limited state of emergency”.

To date, no definitive identification has been established. According to White House representatives, these objects are not U.S. military property, with initial assessments suggesting they may primarily be “manned aircraft … being operated lawfully”. Neither foreign interference nor immediate threats to public safety or national security are suspected, the Pentagon assures. Governor Phil Murphy, however, has urged deeper investigation. He wrote a letter to President Joe Biden in which he referred to these phenomena as “unmanned aerial systems” (UAS), highlighting their unusual size—about six feet in diameter—making them unlikly for amateur-operated drones or toys.
