Big changes are coming to Social Security retirement age 2025, including an increase in the full retirement age — the age when you can claim your full benefits.
Until in the early 80’s, the full retirement age was 65. But in 1983, the Congress passed a law to gradually raise this age as people started living longer. Since then, by adding two months for each birth year, the full retirement age has slowly been increasing.
Let’s understand Social Security retirement age 2025 with an example. If you were born in 1958, your full retirement age is 66 years and 8 months and if you were born next year i.e. in 1959, it increases to 66 years and 10 months. By 2025, people born between May 2, 1958, and February 28, 1959, will reach their full retirement age. For those born in 1960 or later, the full retirement age will go up to 67.

Starting Early or Waiting Longer
You don’t have to wait for your full retirement age to start getting benefits — you can start as early as age 62. But please do keep in mind, your payments will be smaller if you claim early. On the other hand, if you wait until your full retirement age i.e. age 70, you’ll get a larger monthly check as a reward for waiting.
Other Changes in Social Security retirement age 2025

Cost-of-living adjustment (COLA): The COLA will drop to 2.5%, compared to 3.4% in 2024.
Maximum taxable earnings: This limit will be increased from $168,000 to $176,100.
Improved services: Social Security offices across the U.S. will offer appointment-based services.
